Dear Readers,
Answer to the previous post (chemistry as a choice pt 3) is because all the elements couldn't be fitted to the periodic table, so they created extra two rows below the original periodic table :)

This time my topic would be on the movie I watched last night. It was The life of Pi. My family was raving about the movie, and so I decided to check it out. I couldn't get the 3D version and after watching the movie, I have to say that was it was one of those movies that changes a person's outlook in life.

The story was about a man who was telling his story to another man. They were two normal Canadians, but one of them told an incredible story, Piscine Moliter Patel or Pi. In summary, Pi survived a shipwreck on his way from India to Canada, and all his family died as well. The only other survivors were a zebra, hyena, orang utan, and a tiger. As nature took a hold on them, Pi and tiger, named Richard Parker, were the only ones left. After a long time in the sea, when all hopes died, they reached the shores of Mexico. But the tiger went into the jungle leaving a heart-broken Pi who was later rescued by the people living there.

While watching the movie, I felt that I was included in the journey. It was magical yet practical. A must watch movie of the year. Going to watch it again and again.

Cheers

Chemistry as a choice (pt 3)

Dear Readers,
3. Bragging Rights
This is true. Whether you are the best or the worst student, people in general tend to awww at you when you say you are doing Chemistry. My parents were so proud to tell their friends that I am a Chemistry student.

4. Application of logic and memory
This subject is truly wonderful where you don't have to memorise all the points. Apply common sense and you can score. However, compared to all other subjects, you have to completely put your hours just to understand one chapter. When I took this subject, I was finally able to understand what my secondary school teacher taught me. So if you have younger siblings who are taking this subject, do help them out. Don't let teachers murder the fun in learning. Somehow Malaysian teachers only give answers to questions that would come out in exams. Curiosity among students is not encouraged. How lame is that?

Let me ask you a simple question.
Why is the periodic table that we all recognise is arranged the way it is?
I shall answer this question in my next post.
Cheers

Chemistry as a choice (pt 2)

Dear Readers,
Here is my continuation to my previous post.

2. You don't have to worry about future career
Many of my friends choose the medical line, engineering course and law. They are wonderful but it takes a lot more effort and brain capacity to learn and understand the subjects. I don't mean to be discouraging but why would someone study a subject just because it provides a good income in years to come.

In my opinion, I can work anywhere from chocolate factory to producing medicine to pure research line. There is no limit to where you are headed. In fact, it opens to more opportunities. Think about it for a second. I feel that a person should choose a course based on interest. Sadly, not many students are aware of the possibilities of studying chemistry or the future as a chemist.

Personally, I am in awe with all my lecturers. They have the skills, knowledge and a life. Doctors don't have life for the next 10 years after graduating, I have a dad who is an engineer (don't want to talk about it) and studying law is tedious.

Anyway, these are just my opinions. Please don't take into heart as I don't mean to insult anyone. All professions are great but match your interest and character to the type of course you choose. That's what I did and I don't regret any second of it.

I shall write my next point in my next posts.
Cheers

Chemistry as a choice

Dear readers,
I am a 2nd year chemistry student in a university. To those who are interested in taking Chemistry as your major course in university, here is what I would like to say to you;

  1. It is a fun yet challenging course

I wished there was someone who told me all about chemistry when I was a high school student. I was not good at Chemistry and was frequently scoring B's and C's for my exams. I didn't enjoy the subject as I felt it was too tough and difficult to understand. Once I started my pre-university education, I wanted to stay away from that subject. Since I took A Levels and was under Science stream so it was difficult to stray away from Chemistry. As I slowly learnt in my college, I found out that it was my lecturer who instigated the spark of interest in me. I soon learnt that Chemistry isn't all bad, in fact, it gave me excitement whenever I think of experiments. Chemistry experiments are the best.

In school, our teachers was teaching us in English, a recent change in the education system, and they weren't proficient with that language yet. You could choose to blame the teachers but it was forced on them. I couldn't understand basic chemistry because they weren't able to help us understand the subject as in the first place they can't understand what they read. Its like when you are so used to using your right hand to write and suddenly, the government is forcing you to use your left hand to write.

I wished all students who have problem with chemistry seek out help. In Malaysia, we are so used to tuition system. Its fine but somehow it became compulsory to parents who can afford it. The education system alone is not perfect and we are light years away from systems like in US or UK. It is not the syllabus I'm talking about but the nurturing of a student's mind. My younger sister started her pre-university education in an international school right here in Malaysia and I can see a vast difference in terms of learning and thinking skills. Malaysian student became parrots and it is not our fault we are like that.

Chemistry is all about thinking in and out of the box. Don't constrain yourself to just textbooks (in our case, revision books). They are there as stepping stone. There is more to it than mere facts. It saddens me that Malaysian students who can be brilliant, choose to stay as parrots and compete who gets the most score in exams, when they can group together and ponder the best ways to answer or even question the question.

I shall write more about the criteria of becoming an awesome Chemistry student in my next post
Cheers

Review on XBOX 360 kinect

Dear Readers,
I have recently acquired an XBOX 360 kinect. It sounded cool when I learnt about it so I went on wikipedia to read more about it.
You see, I currently have a Playstation 2 I got for my 12 year old birthday present and it is 9 years old now so I thought its time to replace my ancient but wonderful gamestation with a new one. I delibrated between a WII and Playstation 3. The my father asked me to look into how a XBOX works.
My goodness, I was mesmerised by the workings of the kinect model that we immediately went to the mall at that very weekend and bought ourselves one.
It was like getting a gold plated workout plan that I never knew existed. What I meant to say was that it took me a while to realise that I had to move around to get it working.
Oh my gosh. Dance games became so addictive, unfortunately, i was gasping for air for about 5 minutes after dancing to ONE song! what have I done?? I just learned to exercise in my own house.
It did seem funny at first, then I realised that this gamestation is the answer to losing weight and enjoying it. I did enjoy kicking some virtual butt by playing Fighters Uncaged and even beat my sister in Dance Battle game.
To people out there (those who can afford) do buy this wonderful machinery and start living a healthy life. I have lost about 2kg in one week.( I didn't believe it myself) It is much better to play sports and dance at home than going out and losing money. (for me at least)
Cheers people.
